Business Opportunities in Korea

So, after a few months in Korea I am starting to figure out what this country needs. So if anyone wants to start their own business in Korea, let me know. I can tell you what they need here. I think a lot of the Korean people here who want to start a business don't really know what they need here, so they just open up another coffee shop, or mandu place... and sure, people will go there, but you will also have to compete with really successful chains that will probably rob most of your customers... so here are two ideas I have...

Any company that wants great workers for a lower price should totally move to Korea. The office workers here work 14 hr days for NO extra money, not to mention the fact that Korea actually has a law against making people work such long hours for no pay, and the people do it anyway.... It seems the only time the cops enforce a law here is when a foreigner is the criminal... (bitter voice.) Anyway, if you start or move your company here you can advertise that you will only make people work 8 hrs a day and you will get EVERY talented Korean person applying to your place, so you can pick the cream of the crop. And health care is WAY cheaper here. You will have really smart hardworking happy employees... I say do it!

And here is the other idea, for the smaller business man. In Korea there are no baby sitters. If you want to go out on a date with your wife you have to pawn your kids off on a family member, and if they live to far away you have to take the kids with you, or risk leaving them home alone. I know what your thinking... I should start a baby sitting service... well I don't think thats a very good idea. You see you would have to get to the parents house, and parking is too expensive, and so are taxies, so the babysitter would have to know the bus and subway system really well, that thats just an extra cost for the business to incur,... I have a better idea.

I would make a restaurant that has two sides. One side is a romatic restaurant that serves good steak and other fusion foods (fusion means you dont have to stick with just one style of food) and the other side is an awesome play room with supervision and pizza for the kids. The child care would be free for 2 hrs, and there would be some charge after that, and each kid would get a free peice of pizza and a drink, if they want more their parents can buy the kids some tokens before they sit down to dinner that the kids can trade in for food or fun while they are hanging out. The kids can watch a movie too... with popcorn.

Everyone I tell this idea to thinks its great, but I am not the kind of person who starts businesses... but I think these businesses would be good for the owner and the Korean people, so please, someone steal my ideas.

Hi Amanda. Glad to see that you remembered your blog.

Not sure about the first idea. It seems that there are already lots of companies that do that kind of thing in Asia related to outsourcing. I mean, what kind of business would you run in this "office". (maybe you could sell paper?)

The other idea sounds like a winner. Might even work over here too. Also, I would only make the first 2 hours free during off hours. During peak business, I would make it an extra charge. It would then be a perk for going to that restaurant.

Now, you say that you are "not the kind of person who starts businesses". Well, why not? I mean, what do you have to lose. Just write up a business plan, get some local people that would do the actual child care and then go in and sell it to some restaurants using the basis that you wrote up here in your blog. Get the restaurant to cover the expenses, you can manage the first installation and then hire local people to manage all of the additional installs that would undoubtedly come.

Why not?

Anyway, glad to read some more of your words. I hope there is a smile on your face.

Love,

Dad
